4. George Washington2 McBurney (Hamilton1) was born in Farmington, Ontario, NY March 14, 1850. George died February 26, 1928 in Thomas, Custer, OK, at 77 years of age. His body was interred February 28, 1928 in Thomas, Custer, OK, Mound Valley Cemetery.

He married twice. He married Francis A. Hegwood in his father's home in Iowa, March 28, 1871. Francis was born in Iowa February 28, 1851. Francis was the daughter of Tapley Hegwood and Jane Ann Reynolds. Francis died March 3, 1873 in Knoxville, Iowa, at 22 years of age. Her body was interred March 10, 1873 in Monster Cemetery, IA, Monster Cemetery. Francis and G.W. had an infant son that died very young. A daughter, Maude, was born 3-3-1873. Francis died of pneumonia when Maude was an infant. Maude was raised by her maternal grandparents, Tapley and Jane Hegwood. Both the infant son and Maude are buried with Francis in Monster Cemetery.

He married Frances Zeleika Steele in Knoxville, Marion, IA, August 23, 1876. Frances was born in Uniontown, PA June 17, 1859. Frances was the daughter of Charles Steele and Amy Delp. Frances died May 3, 1940 in Thomas, Custer, OK, at 80 years of age. Her body was interred May 8, 1940 in Thomas, Custer, OK. Francis married George Ames but they divorced. Then she married George Washington McBurney August 23, 1876 in Knoxville, Iowa. G.W. married Francis A. Hegwood at the bride's fathers home on March 28, 1871. Their first child, an infant son, died 12-30-1871. Francis died during childbirth along with their infant daughter, Maude, on March 3, 1873. Francis and the two children are buried in Monster Cemetery, IA.

G.W. then maried Francis Steele on August 23, 1876.

George's health had been declining for several years and he contracted pneumonia a few days prior to his death. He passed away at 9 P.M. at his home in Thomas. He was a farmer, stone mason, and building contractor.

Below is GW's obituary, published in the Thomas, OK Tribune, March 1, 1928.

George Washington McBurney was born Mar. 14th 1850 at Farmington, New York. He moved to Iowa with his parents when a small child where he lived practically all the time until coming to Custer County on Oct 1st, 1893. He homesteaded a farm six miles west of Thomas where he made his home until he moved into the city of Thomas 1 1/2 years ago.

He was married to Frances A. Hegwood Mar. 28th, 1871, who died Mar, 3rd, 1873. To this union were born one son, who died in infancy, and one daughter, Mrs. Ira Thurman, of Roosevelt, Okla.

On Aug 23rd, 1876, he was married to Frances Z. Steele of Marian County, Iowa. To this union were born eleven children. Lillie Mable Ames of Memphis, Tenn., Stella A. Fry, of Thomas, Okla., Dr. C.H. McBurney, Clinton, Okla., Elva C. Haug., Edmond, Okla., F.M. McBurney, Wilmington, Calif., C.A. McBurney, Oklahoma City, Okla., R.E. McBurney, Elgin, Ill., Lucy B. Shreck, Thomas, W.J. McBurney, Custer, Okla., Lola L. Beck, Thomas and Ralph Warren McBurney, who died Oct 7, 1919. He had 39 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

He united with the Christian church in March, 1876, 52 years ago, in Knoxville, Iowa in which faith he lived consistently until his death on February 26, 1928, at 9 a.m., at his home in Thomas. Mr. McBurney had been in declining health for several years, and contracted an acute attack of pneumonia a few days ago.

He was well and favorably known throughout western Oklahoma and leaves as a testimonial of a busy life many buildings in various cities of the state including a large number in Hobart, Clinton, Custer and Thomas. The church in which his funeral was held was built by him in the very early days of Thomas.

child 8 iii. Lily Mabel McBurney was born in Durham, IA July 23, 1877. Lily died August 27, 1950 in Oklahoma City, OK, at 73 years of age. She married George Ames. George was born Before 1880.

child 9 iv. Stella Amy McBurney was born in Durham, IA July 9, 1879. Stella died January 30, 1941 in Custer Co., OK, at 61 years of age. She married Elza Elton Fry. Elza was born February 20, 1876. Elza died January 30, 1942 at 65 years of age.

child 10 v. Charles Hamilton McBurney was born in Durham, IA June 22, 1881. Charles died May 18, 1955 in Clinton, OK, at 73 years of age. He married Laressa Carolyn Cox in Leonard, TX, December 9, 1908. Laressa was born in Randolph, TX December 22, 1883. Laressa died 1985 in Manhattan, Riley, KS, at 101 years of age. Her body was interred 1985 in Clinton, OK. Charles McBurney's wife, Laressa authored two books about her experiences with her husband, and living in the frontier state, Oklahoma.

The first book, A Doctor Called Charlie, was published in 1966. The jacket cover describes the book: Fast paced, exciting adventures in raw pioneer land; the unforgettable love of the author and her husband - fresh, poignant, humorour and deeply felt.

The second book, Dr. Charlie's Wife, was published in 1975. It is the story of Laressa Cox McBurney, born in Texas and destined to gentle the turn-of-the-century turbulence that was the Oklahome frontier.

child 11 vi. Elva Caroline McBurney was born in Durham, IA August 11, 1883. Elva died September 15, 1949 in Norman, OK, at 66 years of age. Her body was interred September 20, 1949 in Edmond, OK. She married Jesse Oren Haug in Thomas, Custer, OK, June 24, 1908. Jesse was born in Miltonville, KS August 3, 1882. Jesse died November 21, 1975 in Norman, OK, at 93 years of age. His body was interred in Edmond, OK. (See Jesse Oren Haug for the continuation of this line.) Elva died September 15, 1949 of cancer in Norman, Oklahoma. Elva and husband Jesse are both buried in Edmond, Oklahoma.

child + 12 vii. Frank Marion McBurney was born April 29, 1885.

child 13 viii. Carrol Abraham McBurney was born in Durham, IA September 16, 1888. Carrol died February 9, 1952 in Enid, OK, at 63 years of age. He married Montie Metcalf. Montie was born February 5, 1893. Montie died April 1987 in Enid, OK, at 94 years of age.

child 15 x. Lucy Blanche McBurney was born in Albia, IA April 6, 1892. Lucy died June 14, 1966 in Thomas, Custer, OK, at 74 years of age. She married Eugene M. Shreck. Eugene was born in Kansas September 8, 1886. Eugene was the son of William P. Shreck and Martha J. Shreck. Eugene died October 12, 1970 at 84 years of age. (See Eugene M. child 16 xi. Ralph Warren McBurney was born in Custer Co, OK October 20, 1895. Ralph died October 7, 1919 in Custer Co, OK, at 23 years of age.

child 17 xii. Walter John McBurney was born in Thomas, Custer, OK March 9, 1897. Walter died October 25, 1993 in Jennings, LA, at 96 years of age. His body was interred October 27, 1993 in Evangeline, LA. He married three times. He married Eva Jo Parker in Boulder, CO, August 21, 1920. Eva was born in Graham, TX June 30, 1902. Eva died October 11, 1991 in San Antonio, Bexar County, TX, at 89 years of age. He married Mildred Clarkia Hatchett in Putnam, OK, August 8, 1931. Mildred was born in Arkansas January 12, 1913. Mildred died September 12, 1969 in Jennings, LA, at 56 years of age. He married Thelma Stafford Pierce Marler in Mobile, AL, August 21, 1970. Thelma was born in Arcadia, LA March 25, 1924.

child 18 xiii. Lola Leona McBurney was born in Custer Co, OK September 11, 1900. Lola died July 10, 1940 in Custer Co, OK, at 39 years of age. She married Ray Beck in Custer Co, OK, July 26, 1917. Ray was born in Leoffler, MO April 12, 1894. Ray died in Clovis, NM.
