He married Dorothy Heltzell in Indiana, December 26, 1857. Dorothy was born in Woodstock, Virginia September 23, 1824. Dorothy was the daughter of Henry Heltzell and Elizabeth. Dorothy died July 14, 1905 in Ligonier, Perry Township, Noble County, IN, at 80 years of age. Her body was interred July 20, 1905 in Ligonier, Perry Township, Noble County, IN, Oak Park Cemetery.

Joshua Heffner and Dorothy Heltzell had the following children:

2 i. Lottie² Heffner. She married Scott in Green Bay, WI. At the time of her mother's death, Lottie lived in Green Bay, WI.

3 ii. Susan Heffner. She married Ragotzy in Kalamazoo, MI. At the time of her mother's death, Susan lived in Kalamazoo, MI.

4 iii. Julia Heffner. She married Eppert in Ligonier, Perry Township, Noble County, IN. At the time of her mother's death, Julia lived in Ligonier, IN.

5 iv. Mittie Heffner was born 1865. She married Stiles Cutshaw in Kalamazoo, MI. At the time of her mother's death, Mittie lived in Kalamazoo, MI.

6 v. Edward Heffner was born 1867. He married Mary M. Mull. At the time of his mother's death, Edward lived in Ligonier, IN.
