According to the June 28, 1905 Elgin Daily Courier, William H. Dufree (or Harry Free or Billy Free as he was sometimes known) "was for a number of years engaged in the blacksmithing business at Batavia, IL. Batavia residents claim that he deserted the mother of W. H. Dufree (Jr.) while in New York state and came to Batavia. While there he drank heavily and the family lived more like a band of gypsies than ordinary citizens."

William Henry DuFree (Sr.) had the following child:
