1 NOTE Charlie graduated from Elgin High School in Elgin, IL in 1961.  He
2 CONT graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1967 with a bachelor's
2 CONT degree in Business Management.  After working for a year in Chicago
2 CONT with Standard Oil Company's sales management training program, Charlie
2 CONT joined the United States Air Force in 1968.  As a USAF pilot, he flew
2 CONT the F-4 Phantom in Iceland and Germany, and was an instructor pilot in
2 CONT several training aircraft (T-37, T-38, T-39, etc.)  Charlie completed
2 CONT 20 years of military service and "retired" as a Lieutenant Colonel in
2 CONT October 31, 1988 at MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL.  He flew DC-9s and MD-80s
2 CONT as a commercial airline pilot for Midway Airlines until that company
2 CONT went bankrupt in 1991.  Beginning in 1992, Charlie worked as the
2 CONT Director of Graduate Enrollment Analysis in the Graduate School of the
2 CONT University of South Florida in Tampa until his retirement in December
2 CONT 2004.  Charlie and Diane reside in The Villages, Florida, a multi-golf
2 CONT course retirement community about 50 miles north of Orlando, Florida.

2 CONT William Vanderford died at the home of his daughter, Violet Burgener,
2 CONT in Merrill, WI.
2 CONT According to an article in the September 1, 1967 issue of [BO: [IT:The
2 CONT Gladbrook Tama Northern:IT]:BO], William Vanderford and his family
2 CONT came to Gladbrook, IA about 1912.  "Bill" Vanderford was a carpenter
2 CONT craftsman and contractor by trade.  He was gifted in many other ways.
2 CONT He was always building useful and novel articles.  His first real
2 CONT success was taking a 1914 Model T Ford chassis and building a very
2 CONT neat station wagon on it.  Bill attended an air show in Waterloo, IA
2 CONT in 1921 or 1922.  Part of an article in the 1922 [BO:[IT:Tama
2 CONT Northern:IT]:BO] states Bill visited with the Wright Bros. and brought
2 CONT home in his mind plans and designs for building a small plane.
2 CONT According to a letter from Mrs. Vanderford, she evidently helped Bill
2 CONT with some of the work.  "Vanderford's airplane" was built in the
2 CONT downstairs back room in the house in which Mrs. Edith Broeker lives
2 CONT and the Modern Beauty Shop is located.  [BO:(See image above):BO]
2 CONT All that Bill had for an airplane power plant was an old 2-cylinder
2 CONT Harley-Davidson motorcycle engine.  The wheels and part of the frame
2 CONT and undercarriage were also taken from a motorcycle.  Bill whittled
2 CONT the propeller out of a hickory timber and bound it with strips of
2 CONT brass.  The wing trusses were made out of wood and glued together and
2 CONT then covered with unshrunk canvas.  The canvas was then soaked with
2 CONT water and allowed to shrink tight.  This was then covered with shellac
2 CONT and varnish, allowed to dry, and then rubbed down.  This required
2 CONT several applications.
2 CONT Various notes from Gladbrook citizens state early one spring, before
2 CONT the frost was out of the ground, Bill took his airplane out of the
2 CONT back shed by partly taking the shed apart, so as to get it through the
2 CONT door.  From [BO: [IT:The Gladbrook Tama Northern:IT]:BO], "They
2 CONT tightened the wire trusses that braced the wing until they all had the
2 CONT same tone.  The first time they ran it around on the streets to see if
2 CONT it would go.  The airplane spun around in the street and started for
2 CONT the Fred Wrage home.  It ran over one of the small trees and almost
2 CONT ran onto the porch."
2 CONT Lacking sufficient power, Bill's airplane never did get off the
2 CONT ground.  [BO: [IT:The Gladbrook Tama Northern:IT]:BO] states he tried
2 CONT all summer to get a Henderson 4-cylinder motorcycle engine, but was
2 CONT unable to do so.  Later that fall, Bill removed the wing and stored it
2 CONT in a steel shed.  He removed the wheels and put runners on the body
2 CONT and made a snow sled.
2 CONT A story with picture in the [BO:Des Moines Sunday Register:BO] dated
2 CONT February 18, 1968 offers a slightly different story of Bill
2 CONT Vanderford's airplane.  "Not long after World War I, an Iowan named
2 CONT William Vanderford, of Gladbrook, saw an air derby at Cedar Falls.  It
2 CONT impressed him to such an extent that he decided to build a plane of
2 CONT his own.  He completed it in his main street shop in 1922.  It was
2 CONT powered by a Harley-Davidson motorcycle engine and the propeller was
2 CONT of hand-carved Iowa hickory with brass strips.  The wings were wooden
2 CONT with a shellacked and varnished canvas cover.  The fuselage was braced
2 CONT with wire.  The plane made several trial runs up and down Gladbrook's
2 CONT main street.  Once it got out of control and plunged through several
2 CONT bushes, coming to rest against a porch.  Later it was test flown from
2 CONT a hayfield, but the power was sufficient to raise it only a few inches
2 CONT off the ground.  Eventually Bill Vanderford sold the fuselage, gear
2 CONT and engine to a buyer in Minnesota who converted it into an ice sled.
2 CONT William and his oldest daughter, Violet, came to Elgin in 1927 to find
2 CONT work.  William knew "Homer" in Elgin and William applied to
2 CONT Rhineheimer Woodworking in Elgin as a cabinet maker.  After proving
2 CONT himself he secured a full time job for $1/hour.  Violet secured a job
2 CONT with the phone company.  William returned to Iowa for his family and
2 CONT moved Rose and their six other children to Elgin on Labor Day weekend
2 CONT in 1927.  In Elgin, they lived in small house on Hendee Street.

2 CONT Born to William and Rose Vanderford in Gladbrook, IA, Van was the
2 CONT youngest of seven children. In 1927 his family moved to Elgin, IL. In
2 CONT 1942 he married Eleanor Spencer, who passed away shortly before their
2 CONT 60th wedding anniversary. At the age of 21, he enlisted in the US
2 CONT Marine Corp and served as a crew chief on B-25's in the South Pacific.
2 CONT After the war, he became a carpenter before moving into sales in the
2 CONT 1960's. He was heavily involved in the Elgin Detachment of the Marine
2 CONT Corps League and umpired baseball games in the Elgin area, from little
2 CONT league to semi-pro, for 20-plus years. Retiring early, Van and Ellie
2 CONT moved to Kentucky Lake, and after catching all of the fish there, they
2 CONT began working their way further south and moved to Tullahoma, TN, to
2 CONT enjoy more fishing on Tim's Ford Reservoir. Continuing their way
2 CONT south, they moved to Pine Island, FL in 1998. Then in 2006, Van moved
2 CONT to Calusa Harbor Senior Living in Fort Myers, FL.
2 CONT Van is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Wascher of Pine Island, FL;
2 CONT and son, Kim (Marie) of Chicago, IL.
2 CONT Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Austin
2 CONT and Charles; and sisters, Violet (Burgener), Elsie (Dolby), Hazel
2 CONT (Wagner), and Lurae (Tucker).
2 CONT Services will be held on June 18 at 3 PM at Calusa Harbour in Fort

2 NOTE Gordy died of complications from "Myelodysplastic Syndrome", or a
3 CONT group of conditions caused by abnormal blood-forming cells of the bone
3 CONT marrow.  In myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), the bone marrow cannot
3 CONT produce blood cells effectively. Many of the blood cells formed are
3 CONT defective. These abnormal blood cells are usually destroyed before
3 CONT they leave the bone marrow or shortly after entering the bloodstream.
3 CONT As a result, patients have shortages of blood cells, which are
3 CONT reflected in their low blood counts.
3 CONT Below is Gordy's obituary from the Elgin, IL Courier News:
3 CONT Gordon R. Wascher of St. James City, FL, formerly of Elgin, IL passed
3 CONT away on Tuesday, December 6, 2005 at Cape Coral Hospital, Cape Coral,
3 CONT FL.
3 CONT Born in Elgin, IL on January 30, 1932, the son of Clarence and Amelia
3 CONT (Schramm) Wascher, he resided in Elgin until 1977, at which time he
3 CONT moved to Huntley, IL and resided there for the next ten years until he
3 CONT retired in 1987. From there he spent his retirement years in Southwest
3 CONT FL.
3 CONT He was a retired Teamster with over 30 years of service to several
3 CONT trucking companies in addition to being a 49 year member of The Loyal
3 CONT Order of Moose. In 1953, he served in the U.S. Army in Ft. Leonard
3 CONT Wood, Missouri. Gordon was a member of the Pine Island Cove Homeowners
3 CONT Association where he served on the board of directors as treasurer.
3 CONT For the past two years, he maintained the position of Maintenance and
3 CONT Project Supervisor for Pine Island Cove. He was an active member of
3 CONT Pine Island United Methodist Church. For the past several years, in
3 CONT utilizing his talents and abilities, he continued to do construction
3 CONT projects and carpentry work within the community.
3 CONT Surviving is his wife, Bonnie Kay (Vanderford) Wascher, whom he
3 CONT married in 1976; two sons, William (Lori) Wascher of Hampshire, IL,
3 CONT John (Laurie) Wascher of Olympia, WA; four daughters, Sue (Terry) Volk
3 CONT of Coloma, WI, Mary (Frank) Leone of Elgin, IL, Jane (James) Kawa of
3 CONT Elgin, IL, Jean (Mike) Pickles of Hampshire, IL; three brothers,
3 CONT Richard (Audrey) Wascher of Sharon, WI, Raymond (Betty) Wascher of
3 CONT Marengo, IL, Warren (Kay) Wascher of Woodstock, IL; two sisters,
3 CONT Dorothy Schifferer of Marengo, IL, Gladys (Roger) Fees of Buchanan,
3 CONT MI; as well as 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and many
3 CONT nieces, nephews and cousins.
3 CONT A memorial service was held on Thursday, December 8, 2005 at Pine
3 CONT Island United Methodist Church, Bokeelia, FL. A memorial service will
3 CONT also be held on Saturday, December 17, 2005, 11:00 a.m. at the Grace
3 CONT Evangelical Church, 1800 Bowes Road, Elgin, IL, with a light lunch
3 CONT following at the church.

2 CONT Elsie E. Dolby, of Countryside Manor in Elgin, passed away October 14,
2 CONT 2001. She was born January 16, 1910 in Conrad, Iowa, the daughter of
2 CONT William A. and Rose E. Miller Vanderford.
2 CONT     She lived in Elgin most of her life. She worked as a bookkeeper at
2 CONT Modern Dairy in Elgin for 42 years. She was past president of White
2 CONT Collar Girls and had perfect attendance for 32 years. She enjoyed
2 CONT gardening, crossword puzzles, music and was a die hard Cubs fan. She
2 CONT loved sports of all kinds and was an avid walker.
2 CONT     She is survived by a step-son, Lloyd J. (Darlene Kline-Dolby)
2 CONT Dolby of OR; three step-grandchildren, Constance Dolby Vasek of WA,
2 CONT Laura Dolby-Nicholson of UK and Barbara Dolby Hadley of WA; five
2 CONT step-great grandchildren, Arthur, Marie, and Reid Vasek, Fiona
2 CONT Nicholson and Henrietta Hadley; Nancy Jean Bonkoski formerly married
2 CONT to Mr. Lloyd Dolby; a brother, Wilbur (Eleanor) Vanderford of FL; two
2 CONT sisters-in-law, Sybil Vanderford of Elgin and Dorothy Vanderford of
2 CONT WI; many nieces and nephews including her niece and special care giver
2 CONT Pat (Dr. Jon)Sunderlage of West Dundee.
2 CONT     Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Loren J. in 1985; three
2 CONT sisters,Violet Burgener, Lurae Tucker and Hazel Wagner; also two
2 CONT brothers, Austin and Charles.
2 CONT     Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 19, 2001 in Madison
2 CONT Funeral Home, Rev. Edward Davis officiating. Burial at Bluff City

1 NOTE Herman's family came to the United States in 1910, settling in Two
2 CONT Buttes, CO.  They moved to Merrill, WI in 1913 and then to a farm in
2 CONT Schley, WI in the spring of 1914.  Herman married Violet Rose
2 CONT Vanderford on June 28, 1980 after meeting her when he was working in
2 CONT the Chicago area.  Herman and Violet farmed in the town of Schley
2 CONT until 1966.  Herman also did carpentry work in his early years for a
2 CONT resort in the Minocqua, WI area.  Herman cut and hauled pulp wood, and
2 CONT was on the board of directors for the Associated Co-op Services in
2 CONT Merrill, WI, and the Antigo Milk Products Corp.  From 1940-1955 he
2 CONT managed the Lincoln County Livestock Shipping Association.  He served
2 CONT as an insurance adjustor and served on the board of directors of the
2 CONT Wausau Mutual Insurance Company from 1954 until he retired in 1984.
2 CONT He served as president of that company from 1965 until 1971.  Herman
2 CONT served on the church council of St. Stephens United Church of Christ
2 CONT and was a member of the church choir for 30 years.

2 CONT Sharon S. Kuehn Bergman, 52, of Okmulgee, Okla., formerly of Merrill,
2 CONT passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at Highland Park Nursing Home in
2 CONT Okmulgee, under the care of her family and hospice services.
2 CONT Sharon was born in Merrill on July 21, 1955, daughter of Richard and
2 CONT Shirley Burgener Kuehn, Wausau. She is further survived by her son
2 CONT Daniel (Kaori) Praschak, and their daughter Julian, all of Okmulgee,
2 CONT Okla.; her daughter Jennifer (Josh Lone) and their children Nathan and
2 CONT Lucas, all of Okmulgee; two brothers James (Ann) Kuehn and their
2 CONT daughter Carly Ann, all of Madison; and Thomas (Donna) Kuehn and their
2 CONT children Nathan, Alex, Ryan and Claire Kuehn, all of rural Tomahawk;
2 CONT and Jim Konyn, Merrill; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.
2 CONT Sharon was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill.
2 CONT She graduated from Merrill High School in 1973. She attended both UW
2 CONT Marathon Campus and Northcentral Technical College, and earned her
2 CONT degree in "Interpretation for the Deaf." She moved to Okmulgee, Okla.,
2 CONT in 1990. Sharon was a receptionist for a local motel in Okmulgee prior
2 CONT to her illness. She loved to do cross stitch, play the piano and write
2 CONT stories and poetry. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church,
2 CONT Okmulgee.
2 CONT A memorial service was held at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home,
2 CONT Okmulgee, on Sunday, Jan. 20. A local memorial service will be held 11
2 CONT a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill. Rev.
2 CONT David Klemm will officiate. Burial of Sharon's cremated remains will
2 CONT take place in the spring at Luther Memorial Church Cemetery, town of
2 CONT Schley. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the church.

1 NOTE Dr. Curtis Ray Sunderlage, 36, of Elgin passed away unexpectedly on
2 CONT Sunday, April 10, 2005.
2 CONT He was born on Father's Day, June 16, 1968 in St. Louis, MO, the son
2 CONT of Dr. Jon A. and Patricia L. (Wagner) Sunderlage. Curt was a 1986
2 CONT graduate of Larkin High School, Elgin Community College and graduated
2 CONT with his Doctorate of Chiropractic degree from Logan College of
2 CONT Chiropractic, Chesterfield, (St. Louis) MO in December 2000. Curt was
2 CONT joining his father and sister in their Elgin acupuncture and
2 CONT chiropractic practice. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter's
2 CONT Evangelical Lutheran Church of North Plato. Curt married Amanda M.
2 CONT Stuckemeyer at St. Peter's on September 5, 2004.
2 CONT Surviving are his wife, Amanda; his parents of West Dundee; his
2 CONT sister, Dr. Joy L. Sunderlage of Elgin and her fiance, Brian
2 CONT Luebbering of Batavia; his father and mother-in-law, Ray and Barbara
2 CONT Stuckemeyer of Hampshire; a sister-in-law, Anna Stuckemeyer of
2 CONT Hampshire; aunts, uncles, cousins and a multitude of friends.
2 CONT He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Edmund and Dora
2 CONT Sunderlage and Raymond and Hazel Wagner; his aunt and uncle, Joan

2 CONT Sue Ann Sarto Volk (nee Wascher), 56, of Coloma, WI, formerly of
2 CONT Elgin, passed away July 13, 2008 along with her husband, Terry L.
2 CONT Volk, after a motorcycle accident outside of Atlanta, GA. She was born
2 CONT on August 22, 1951 in Elgin, IL and was the daughter of Leonard
2 CONT Schmoldt and Marilyn (Koch) Kruschel.
2 CONT As a young child, she was adopted by her step-father, Gordon Wascher.
2 CONT Sue had worked for Williams Manufacturing for many years. She loved to
2 CONT travel, garden, craft, and cook. She was a loving wife, mother, and
2 CONT grandmother, and will be dearly missed. Family and friends were very
2 CONT important to her.
2 CONT She married Terry on December 23, 1983 in Geneva, IL. The couple lived
2 CONT in Mitchell, SD for several years, and came back to live in Elgin, IL.
2 CONT Later, they made Coloma, WI their home after retirement.
2 CONT Survivors include her children, Matthew (Jill) Sarto of Algonquin, IL,
2 CONT and Kevin Sarto of Coloma, WI, and Karen Olson of Algonquin, IL; her
2 CONT five grandchildren, Jaci Olson, Cheyenne Sarto, Nicholas Sarto,
2 CONT Gabrielle Sarto, and Riley Sarto; her mother, Marilyn Kruschel of
2 CONT Belvedere, IL; her step-children, Julie Naylor of St. Charles, IL,
2 CONT Lisa Sloan of South Elgin, IL, and Brian Volk of South Elgin, IL; her
2 CONT step-grandchildren, Jennifer Naylor, Jeremiah Sloan, and Joshua

1 NOTE According to his death certificate, John Austin Vanderford was born in
2 CONT Noble County, Indiana on September 28, 1853.  The Noble County
2 CONT marriage records also list John's birth date as September 28, 1853.
2 CONT Pictures of his grave headstone show he was born in 1845, but Grundy
2 CONT County Iowa (Conrad, IA) Internet tombstone records list his birth
2 CONT year as 1850, so there is some question about exactly when he was
2 CONT born.  Since he is not listed in the 1850 census, the September 28,
2 CONT 1853 birth date on his marriage and death certificates is probably
2 CONT correct.
2 CONT John Austin Vanderford was not listed in the Noble County, Indiana
2 CONT 1850 census with his father (Austin Comer Vanderford), mother (Dorothy
2 CONT Heltzell), and siblings, Emily (age 4), William (age 2), and Sarah
2 CONT (age 6 months).  All children are listed as born in Indiana.  Ten
2 CONT years later in the 1860 Noble County census John Vanderford is listed
2 CONT as a 7 year old boy along with half brother George Heffner (age 20),
2 CONT half sister Mary Heffner (age 18), half sister Charlotte Heffner (age
2 CONT 6 months), sister Emily Vanderford (age 14), sister Jane Vanderford
2 CONT (age 8), sister Lucretia Vanderford (age 3), and brother Homer
2 CONT Vanderford (age 2).  All children are listed as born in Indiana.  John
2 CONT is living with his mother Dorothy Heffner, and her husband Joshua
2 CONT Heffner.  In the 1860 census William and Sarah (from the 1850 census)
2 CONT are missing along with the father, Austin Comer Vanderford.
2 CONT Apparently all three died and Dorothy remarried although the marriage
2 CONT is not listed in the Noble County marriage records.  Judging by the
2 CONT ages and last names of the children in the census, John Vanderford's
2 CONT father (Austin Comer Vanderford) would have died between 1857 and
2 CONT 1859.  The Indiana 1870 census shows John Vanderford living in the
2 CONT city of Elkhart, county of Elkhart, Indiana.  His occupation was a
2 CONT blacksmith.  According to the Noble County, IN marriage records, John
2 CONT Vanderford married Mattie Bruner June 28, 1874.  In about 1880, John
2 CONT and Mattie  moved to Marshalltown, Iowa where they lived for about 10
2 CONT years.  Then they moved to Conrad, Grundy County, Iowa where they
2 CONT lived for many years.
2 CONT From John Austin Vanderford's obituary write up in an Iowa newspaper,
2 CONT "Mr. Vanderford owned and operated a blacksmith shop on the sight now
2 CONT occupied by the Alexander Funeral Parlor.  This was swept out during
2 CONT the fire that destroyed the town.  He later built the building now
2 CONT occupied by Mrs. O. H. Thorsrud.  He retired from the blacksmith
2 CONT business a few years ago."
2 CONT An article in the October 6, 1928 edition of the [BO:[IT:Elgin
2 CONT Courier:IT]:BO] newspaper states John Austin Vanderford, a retired
2 CONT blacksmith, was visiting his son (William) who lived at 513 Hendee
2 CONT Street, Elgin, IL.  He often walked along the nearby railroad tracks
2 CONT with which he was familiar.  Approximately 2:00 PM on the afternoon of
2 CONT October 6th he was walking between the double tracks of the Milwaukee
2 CONT Railroad about 400 feet south of the Walnut Avenue crossing in Elgin.
2 CONT He had been very hard of hearing and did not hear the west-bound
2 CONT passenger train approaching until too late.  When the engine whistle
2 CONT sounded, he sprang directly into the path of the locomotive, no doubt
2 CONT under the belief that he was safe.  Another newspaper account states
2 CONT "He was walking on a double track and evidently thought the train
2 CONT coming from behind him was on the other track and made no effort to
2 CONT get out of the way according to reports of the accident."  He was
2 CONT taken to St. Joseph's hospital in Elgin where he died of a skull
2 CONT fracture at 3:20 PM that same day.  He was buried in Conrad, Iowa a
2 CONT few days later.  The newspaper article states John Austin Vanderford's
2 CONT wife died several years earlier.

2 CONT Born in Albia, IA in 1890, Robert's family moved to Oklahoma when he
2 CONT was three years old.  His father settled on a ranch near Elreno, OK,
2 CONT which he homesteaded during the 1892 Cherokee land rush.  Robert's
2 CONT father built a home, half dug-out and half logs, and then sent for his
2 CONT wife and seven children.  Four more children were born in Oklahoma
2 CONT making a total of six boys and five girls.  Robert attended country
2 CONT school until he completed 8th grade, later attending high school at
2 CONT Thomas, OK, six miles from his home.  He later attended Gem City
2 CONT Business College in Quincy, IL, where he studied banking and general
2 CONT business.
2 CONT Robert worked at several businesses before retirement.  He worked as
2 CONT cashier of the Butler State Bank in Butler, OK for eight years and
2 CONT served as City Treasurer of Butler, OK.  He was later employed at
2 CONT Bunge's Tire and Rubber in Elgin, IL for 15 years before World War II
2 CONT when he joined the ship yards at Seneca, IL.  After the war he was a
2 CONT member of Batavia, IL Furnas Electric Co.
2 CONT Robert had several hobbies.  His retirement home was on the Fox River
2 CONT in South Elgin, IL where he could enjoy his two favorite hobbies:
2 CONT fishing and boating.  Another favorite was woodworking.
2 CONT Robert died in an auto accident as he was preparing to visit his
2 CONT brother Walter who lived in Louisiana.  His daughter (Sybil) wrote
2 CONT that September 25, 1961 was one of the worst rains ever in one day.
2 CONT It was a Monday and on all Mondays since he retired, Robert drove the
2 CONT 4-5 miles from his home in South Elgin to Elgin, IL to file for
2 CONT compensation.  He visited with Sybil at her work location for 5-10
2 CONT minutes.  He was concerned because the Fox river was so high and he
2 CONT feared his pier might float away.  Sybil suggested he put heavy rocks
2 CONT on the pier and he left about 2:00 PM to do just that.  He also
2 CONT mentioned that he hoped to use his new boat some more before it turned

2 CONT water.  The auto accident occurred on Rt. 31, a two lane state highway
2 CONT between the towns of Elgin and South Elgin, IL.  As he was driving
2 CONT south, a car quite a ways in front of him had stopped to make a left
2 CONT hand turn, waiting for north bound traffic to clear.  That car had his
2 CONT turn signal on, but Robert evidently did not see it or the car's brake
2 CONT lights in time.  Robert slammed on his brakes and went into a skid on
2 CONT the wet pavement, hitting the rear of the car in front of him and
2 CONT swerved into the north bound lane where a north bound car hit him
2 CONT behind the driver's door.  That caused the door to spring open and
2 CONT Robert was thrown out on his head.  He died nearly 3 hours later at
2 CONT the hospital without regaining conciousness with his family in
2 CONT attendance.

1 NOTE W.H. "Harry" DuFree was born in 1854 in Danville, NY.  According to
2 CONT the [BO:Elgin Daily Courier:BO] he was educated at Alfred Seminary
2 CONT where he studied chemistry and medicine.  After leaving school he
2 CONT learned the mason's trade.  Of an inventive mind, he continued
2 CONT studying after leaving school.  He had patented several articles used
2 CONT in his craft.  His principal invention was an improved building brick,
2 CONT a patent for which was issued to him January 11, 1898.  The
2 CONT ingredients used in the hardening process consist of sulfuric acid,
2 CONT water of ammonia, and pulverized alum.  In 1900, Harry and Dr. W. H.
2 CONT Truesdell formed a company for manufacturing the brick and for the
2 CONT sale of patent rights.  The company had a plant on Chicago Street in
2 CONT Elgin, IL, but it was abandoned in 1903 due to Harry's health.  Harry
2 CONT traveled all over the United States selling patent rights to his
2 CONT invention.  He made considerable money in the venture but stated his
2 CONT profits were spent in advertising and travel expenses.  Following an
2 CONT accident where chemicals Harry was mixing exploded, he lost his sight
2 CONT in one eye and was partially blinded in the other eye.
2 CONT His first wife was Sarah Kesterton of Danville, New York.  They were
2 CONT married January 8, 1876.  Harry and Sarah had a daughter who they
2 CONT named Goldia.  Goldia was raised by Harry's sister, Mrs. Michael
2 CONT Gannon of Greensburg, IN.  Goldia lived for a while in NYC.  In 1903,
2 CONT Goldia (Gannon) went to Alaska to marry Army Captain Will Davis on
2 CONT August 6th.  Sarah later died during child birth January 6, 1879.
2 CONT Harry's second wife was Bertha Lorenz of Dundee, IL.  They were
2 CONT married May 14, 1895 in Beloit, WI.  Harry and Bertha had three girls:
2 CONT Mary Agnes, Ruth Elizabeth, and Isabel.  Bertha was ill for nearly a
2 CONT year and a half previous to her sudden death.  She reportedly died of
2 CONT anemia February 14, 1902 in Elgin, IL.
2 CONT His third wife was Elizabeth Cunningham of Brookston, IN.  Harry and
2 CONT Elizabeth were married in Elgin, IL September 1, 1903 and had one
2 CONT girl, Mildred who was 13 months old when her mother died.  Prior to
2 CONT meeting Harry, Elizabeth worked at the Elgin Watch factory.  She
2 CONT continued working after their marriage, evidently supporting them as
2 CONT best she could.  She died suddenly at 11:50 AM on Tuesday, June 20,
2 CONT 1905 in their home at 121 Grove Ave. in Elgin, IL.  According to the
2 CONT [BO:Elgin Daily Courier:BO] she was found suffering from convulsions
2 CONT and Dr. Burlingame and Dr. Sturm were summoned.  They found her
2 CONT unconscious and could do little for her.
2 CONT A coroner's inquest requested that W.H. DuFree be held on $1,000 bond
2 CONT pending a chemical analysis of the contents of his wife's stomach.
2 CONT This action was taken when Dr. Sturm, who performed the post mortem,
2 CONT stated the findings did not coincide with the condition with which
2 CONT they found Mrs. DuFree.  Harry DuFree was later arrested on a charge
2 CONT of murder on June 22, 1905, but was released on his own recognizance
2 CONT with an order to report each day.  Harry was freed when the district
2 CONT attorney dropped the murder charges, since no evidence of toxins were
2 CONT found in Elizabeth's stomach.  The coroner's inquest concluded
2 CONT Elizabeth died from pneumonia and complications of acute Bright's
2 CONT disease, cloddy swelling of the liver, and degeneration of the heart.
2 CONT Elizabeth's brother, Silas Cunningham, requested custody of 13 month
2 CONT old Mildred so his family could raise her.  Harry finally agreed.  The
2 CONT older three girls (Mary, Ruth, and Isabel) went to live with their
2 CONT grandparents (Carl and Maria Lorenz) in Barrington, IL.
2 CONT During the murder investigation the district attorney discovered that
2 CONT Harry had buried another woman in Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin, IL,
2 CONT September 9, 1900.  The  cemetery register showed her name as "Mrs
2 CONT Mary DuFree", 54 years old.  She was reportedly born in Mansfield, OH,
2 CONT March 22, 1846, and died at the home of her brother-in-law Henry M.
2 CONT DuFree.  The published obituary stated she came to Elgin, IL in 1895
2 CONT and was employed by Cutter and Crossette shirt company.  She was a
2 CONT widow and left no family.  However, the address where she died was the
2 CONT same home in Elgin that Harry and his wife (Bertha) occupied at 1032
2 CONT Morton Ave.  The [BO:Elgin Daily Courier:BO] speculated Harry may have
2 CONT been married to Bertha and "Mary" at the same time, but Harry refuted
2 CONT that stating Mary DuFree was his sister.  The district attorney was
2 CONT not able to prove bigamy so did not prefer charges.  But it is
2 CONT interesting to note that there are three women buried in Bluff City
2 CONT cemetery in Elgin, all with the name of Mrs. DuFree.  And all three
2 CONT burials were paid for by W. H. "Harry" DuFree!

2 CONT his home in Thomas.  He was a farmer, stone mason, and building
2 CONT contractor.

2 CONT George Washington McBurney was born Mar. 14th 1850 at Farmington, New
2 CONT York.  He moved to Iowa with his parents when a small child where he
2 CONT lived
2 CONT practically all the time until coming to Custer County on Oct 1st,
2 CONT 1893. He  homesteaded a farm six miles west of Thomas where he made
2 CONT his home until he moved into the city of Thomas 1 1/2 years ago.
2 CONT He was married to Frances A. Hegwood Mar. 28th, 1871, who died Mar,
2 CONT 3rd, 1873. To this union were born one son, who died in infancy, and
2 CONT one daughter, Mrs. Ira Thurman, of Roosevelt, Okla.
2 CONT On Aug 23rd, 1876, he was married to Frances Z. Steele of Marian
2 CONT County, Iowa.  To this union were born eleven children. Lillie Mable
2 CONT Ames of Memphis, Tenn., Stella A. Fry, of Thomas, Okla., Dr. C.H.

2 CONT Knoxville, Iowa in which faith he lived consistently until his death
2 CONT on February 26, 1928, at 9 a.m., at his home in Thomas. Mr. McBurney
2 CONT had been in declining health for several years, and contracted an
2 CONT acute attack of pneumonia a few days ago.
2 CONT He was well and favorably known throughout western Oklahoma and leaves
2 CONT as a testimonial of a busy life many buildings in various cities of
2 CONT the state
2 CONT including a large number in Hobart, Clinton, Custer and Thomas. The
2 CONT church in which his funeral was held was built by him in the very
2 CONT early days of Thomas.

1 NOTE According to Ludwig Martin Engebretson's obituary, Ludwig was the son
2 CONT of Christian and Sophia Wold Engebretson and was bor in the town of
2 CONT Albion, WI on February 4, 1889.  He died on Tuesday, December 27, 1949
2 CONT at the age of 60 years.
2 CONT Ludwig had been ill for several years after suffering a heart attack.
2 CONT He was taken to the hospital in Madison, WI by his daughter, Mrs.
2 CONT Warren Lyons about a month or so before his death and spent 2 weeks
2 CONT there under tratment.  He felt improved and upon leaving the hospital
2 CONT had traveled to Illinois where he visited his 6 married daughters.  He
2 CONT returend home, attended church services in Little Norway on Sunday and
2 CONT on Tuesday had gone to town for the afternoon.  He suffered a heart
2 CONT attack just as he was entering Robert Flugstad's store and died at
2 CONT once.
2 CONT Ludwig married Louise Marie Gilbertson on February 6, 1910 in Winona,
2 CONT Minnesota.  They had since made their home in the town of Irving where
2 CONT he engaged in farming.  Nine daughters were born to them:  Muriel,
2 CONT Clarice, Lillian, Edna, Janice, Marian, Avis and Verna Mae.  Verna Mae
2 CONT died in 1928 at the age of nine months.
2 CONT At the time of his death he was survived by all of his siblings:  4
2 CONT sisters, Agnes (Mrs. Peter Peterson - Disco, WI), Clara (Mrs. Archie
2 CONT Jones - Glendive, Mont.), Sylvia (Mrs. Marvin O'Grady - Seattle, WA)

2 CONT Marie Engebretson was born March 2, 1889 in the Town of Irving (WI) to
2 CONT Lars and Mattie (Benson) Engebretson.  Her entire life was spent in
2 CONT the Irving area where she was a lifelong member of the Little Norway
2 CONT Lutheran congregation and its Ladies Aid.  She and her husband,
2 CONT Ludwig, engaged in farming.  She entered the Krohn Hospital April 4th;
2 CONT but had been in failing health for 2 years with a heart condition.
2 CONT Her passing was due to a stroke, which occured early Sunday morning,
2 CONT April 14, 1963.  She was interned in the chruch cemetery.
2 CONT She and Ludwig had 8 daughters:  Clarice (Mrs. Roy Meyers - Woodstock,
2 CONT IL), Muriel (Mrs. Warren Lyons - Black River Falls, WI), Lillian (Mrs.
2 CONT Wilmer Reimer - Elgin, IL), Edna (Mrs. Clarence Johnson - Crystal
2 CONT Lake, IL), Janice (Mrs. Earl Freund - Woodstock, IL), Marian (Mrs.
2 CONT Harold Thurow - Woodstock, IL), Avis (Mrs. Eldon Jensen - Hazelton,

2 CONT Her greatest interest in life was in the achievement and progress of
2 CONT her daughters and with their business professions and homes.  During

2 CONT officiating.  Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
2 CONT Avis was born July 15, 1931, in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, the
2 CONT daughter of Ludwig and Louise (Gilbertson) Engebretson.  She was
2 CONT raised and educated in Black River Falls.  She moved to North Dakota
2 CONT in 1953 and to Bismarck in 1970.  She was active in the Homemakers
2 CONT Club and American Legion Auxiliary.
2 CONT She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Terry and LeRoy
2 CONT Kuss, Bismarck, Kim Langer and Dale Lingert, and Linda and Robb
2 CONT Teeters, Wamsutter, Wyoming; three sons and one daughter-in-law,

1 NOTE Austin Comer Vanderford was born in Eagle Township, Hocking County
2 CONT (now Vinton County), Ohio in 1821.  Austin and Dorothy had 6 children
2 CONT - John, Jenny, Lou, and Homer were the ones who survived Dorothy.
2 CONT Records at the US Department of the Interior - Bureau of Land
2 CONT Management ([UL:[BO:http://www.glorecords.blm.gov:BO]:UL]) show Austin
2 CONT Comer Vanderford applied for and was awarded a land patent twice.  On
2 CONT June 1, 1847, he received a patent to transfer 80 acres of land in
2 CONT Noble County, IN.  On May 1, 1849 he received a patent to transfer 40
2 CONT acres of land also in Noble county, IN.  Land patents document the
2 CONT transfer of land ownership from the federal government to individuals.
2 CONT In the early 1800's people could buy public land for $1.25 an acre.
2 CONT For a time, they could buy up to 640 acres under this law.  Austin
2 CONT Comer purchased 120 acres of land that are located in York Township,
2 CONT just west of the city of Albion, the Noble County, Indiana government
2 CONT seat.  Austin Comer's brothers also received land patents for land
2 CONT purchased in northern Indiana and in Ohio.
2 CONT The following information is about Austin's brother Joel Vanderford,
2 CONT and is published in the history of Noble county by Goodspeed and
2 CONT Blanchard.  It will provide the reader with some insight as to life in
2 CONT the middle 1800s in Indiana.
2 CONT "JOEL VANDERFORD was born in Ross County, Ohio, November 5, 1813 where
2 CONT he passed his boyhood and youth.  At the age of twenty-two, he packed
2 CONT his earthly possessions in a cotton
2 CONT handkerchief, and tramped to this county (Noble County, Indiana) where
2 CONT he grubbed and cut wood at 25 cents a cord and boarded himself, to
2 CONT make the money with which he bought the first land he ever owned-the
2 CONT eighty acres on which the fine buildings of Orlando Kimmell now stand.
2 CONT In the summer of 1836, Mr. Vanderford and John Male felled the timber,
2 CONT cut and split 40,000 fence rails. They also laid up a portion of them
2 CONT into fences.  March 21, 1837, he married Miss
2 CONT Emeline Bull.   She was born in Perry County, Pennsylvania, February
2 CONT 23, 1815.  Their housekeeping outfit was a board laid on the flour
2 CONT barrel for a table, half a dozen plates, half a dozen knives and
2 CONT forks, one kettle, a teakettle and a skillet.  For a cupboard, he put
2 CONT clapboards on wooden pins on the wall.  They had one good bed and a
2 CONT bedstead; for the extra bed he put a long and a shorter pole into
2 CONT holes in the logs and put on clapboards for the tank to lie on.  They
2 CONT had two chairs with splint bottoms and two without bottoms,  Mr.
2 CONT Vanderford grubbed for Joel Smith until he accumulated $2.50, with
2 CONT which he purchased two bushels of wheat, had it ground and
2 CONT took it home.  It proved to be worthless and made him sick, so he went
2 CONT to John G. Hall, who had a mill one mile east of Wolf Lake, and
2 CONT bargained with him for a bushel of corn meal.  He was to bring his
2 CONT yoke of oxen and log one day for the meal.  When night came, the
2 CONT miller could scrape together but a half bushel.  This necessitated
2 CONT coming to the mill again.  As he lived four miles from the mill, he
2 CONT had to drive his ox team sixteen miles and do a hard day®s logging for
2 CONT a bushel of corn meal.  In 1852, Mr. Vanderford went to California and
2 CONT then to Oregon, and traveled over near its entire extent.  While there
2 CONT he split three thousand rails.  He was absent three years, and
2 CONT returned in 1855, touching in Havana and Key West.  While on the
2 CONT Pacific Ocean, he barely escaped being lost in a storm, but he has
2 CONT weathered it all, and is now a hale and hearty man, surrounded by all
2 CONT that tends to make life enjoyable.  He owns 317 acres of good land.
2 CONT His residence is on Section 28, six miles west of Albion.  The
2 CONT following children are living:  Sarah Ann, Elizana, Richard Clark,
2 CONT Mary and William C.  Two are dead-Nancy Jane and John Fremont.
2 CONT Two of his sons were in the Army-Richard Clark and William C.
2 CONT Richard C. received five wounds, two of which were severe.  One son,
2 CONT John F., was drowned in the lake at Chicago.  Mr. Vanderford is a
2 CONT Republican, and a member of the Church of God.  He was on the first
2 CONT grand jury impaneled in this county."

1 NOTE JJ Bruner was a cabinet maker and carpenter.  JJ and Catherine moved
2 CONT north to Sandusky County, OH about 1823 and eventually settled in
2 CONT Noble County, IN in 1848.  He married Sarah Gerber Morrel (widow of
2 CONT Samuel Morrel) July 26, 1874 in Noble County, IN after the death of
2 CONT his first wife, Catherine Luce.
2 CONT Below is his obituary from the Albion Democrat, May 25, 1899:
2 CONT Jacob J. Bruner was born in Fairfield Co., OH, on Dec. 2, 1818; died
2 CONT in Ligonier, IN, May 11, 1899, aged 80 years, 5 months, 9 days. He
2 CONT married Catherine Lance (sic) in 1845. They had 5 children, 3 of whom
2 CONT are living. He came to Albion in 1848 & was engaged in the furniture
2 CONT trade. He resided there until 1870 when he moved to Ligonier. His wife
2 CONT died about this time. In 1874, he married Mrs. Sarah Morrell. He
2 CONT worked in the carpenter trade in Ligonier until the past few years. He
2 CONT was a member of the Adventist Church. The funeral was held at his late
2 CONT residence Saturday, burial Ligonier Cemetery.

2 CONT Matthew Joseph Loeffler, Ponca City resident, passed away Thursday,
2 CONT May 18, 2006, at the Shawn Manor Nursing Center in Ponca City. He was
2 CONT 65.
2 CONT The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, at the Osage
2 CONT Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Hutchins, pastor of Osage
2 CONT Heights Baptist Church, and Jerry Grever of Osage Heights Baptist
2 CONT Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Resthaven Memorial
2 CONT Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home.
2 CONT Matt was born on April 22, 1941, to Rupert Loeffler and Gertrud Barron
2 CONT Loeffler in Milwaukee, Wis. He graduated Pious High School in 1960 and
2 CONT began to work for A.O. Smith in Milwaukee. During his younger years
2 CONT Matt enjoyed camping with his friends.
2 CONT On May 3, 1969, he married Betty Burgener Davis in Milwaukee, Wis.
2 CONT They moved their family to Ponca City in 1981 where Matt went to work
2 CONT for St. Joseph's Hospital as a custodian for eight years. After his
2 CONT work at the hospital he went to work at the Albertson's Distribution
2 CONT Center for 10 years.
2 CONT Matt loved to be with his family and really enjoyed being around his
2 CONT kids. He also enjoyed tinkering around with mechanical things.
2 CONT He is survived by his wife Betty of the home; seven children, Laurie
2 CONT and her husband Al, Jim and his wife Gloria, Bucky and his wife Sandy,
2 CONT all of Wisconsin, Beth and her husband Ron, John and his wife Susan,
2 CONT all of California, Rod and his wife Carol, and Tom all of Ponca City;
2 CONT brothers, Rupert Loeffler Jr., James Loeffler, Donald Loeffler, Jerry
2 CONT Loeffler, all from Wisconsin, and Larry Loeffler of Oregon; 30
2 CONT grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
2 CONT He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kenny.
2 CONT Casket bearers will be Tom Loeffler, Rod Davis, Michael Davis, Allen
2 CONT Bladorn, Jason Oswalt and Logan Davis.
2 CONT Honorary casket bearers will be Jack Streeter, Greg Jenkins, Gary
2 CONT Jackson, Steve Dotson, John Bowman, Gene Hutchinson, Derrick Fok and
2 CONT Larry Steele.

1 NOTE According to notes from some of her nieces and nephews, Min may have
2 CONT been born on the ship as her family crossed the Atlantic from Germany
2 CONT to America.  The 1920 census shows Minnie and husband (Louis/Theodore)
2 CONT living in West Palm Beach, FL with their 3 children.  However, the
2 CONT 1930 census shows Minnie with the last name of Eissfeldt, age 43,
2 CONT occupation saleslady,  living in Chicago as head of household with her
2 CONT children, but no husband.  Her mother was also living with her at that
2 CONT time.  Min's sister's (May Knippenberg) obituary in the Chicago
2 CONT Tribune, February 11, 1954, lists Min's last name as Binetsch.  Min
2 CONT Binetsch is also listed in her brother's obituary in the Chicago
2 CONT Tribune February 12, 1963.  So some time between the 1930 census and
2 CONT her sister's funeral in 1954, Min must have remarried.  A possible
2 CONT husband with the last name of Binetsch is listed in the SS death
2 CONT index.  Theodore Binetsch was born May 21, 1887 in ILL and died in
2 CONT January 1975 in Springfield, IL.
